Kaylee Rogers – Hallelujah

After coming across this video on Christmas day, I just have to share it.  Kaylee is a special child.  She has autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, but when she sings…be prepared to be touched by an angel!   It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to her rendition of the song, such was the power of little Kaylee’s voice and interpretation of the lyrics of Hallelujah.

I have a young niece who has moderate spectrum autism and Global Development Delay (GDD), who can’t speak at all even at 5 years old, but is such sweet and mild-tempered girl and such a joy to all of us.  Seeing the milestones that Kaylee has achieved even with her disorders, I am heartened to know that En En may one day be able to overcome her own disorders, to learn to speak and do things on her own like Kaylee does, and perhaps unleash her special ability.

This Christmas-themed remake of Hallelujah consists of lyrics by American Christian rock band Cloverton.  The full lyrics sung by Kaylee can be found here:

Hallelujah Lyrics by Cloverton:

I’ve heard about this baby boy
Who’s come to earth to bring us joy
And I just want to sing this song to you
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
With every breath I’m singing Hallelujah

A couple came to Bethlehem
Expecting child, they searched the inn
To find a place for You were coming soon
There was no room for them to stay
So in a manger filled with hay
God’s only Son was born, oh Hallelujah

The shepherds left their flocks by night
To see this baby wrapped in light
A host of angels led them all to You
It was just as the angels said
You’ll find Him in a manger bed
Immanuel and Savior, Hallelujah

A star shown bright up in the east
To Bethlehem, the wisemen three
Came many miles and journeyed long for You
And to the place at which You were
Their frankincense and gold and myrrh
They gave to You and cried out Hallelujah

I know You came to rescue me
This baby boy would grow to be
A man and one day die for me and you
My sins would drive the nails in You
That rugged cross was my cross, too
Still every breath You drew was Hallelujah

This is a much more appropriate lyrics for Christmas than the original lyrics by Leonard Cohen, which some have interpreted to consist of sexual connotation.  I have include the original lyrics by Leonard Cohen below.  You can find various interpretation of the lyrics on this website: https://www.lyricinterpretations.com/leonard-cohen/hallelujah

Hallelujah Lyrics by Leonard Cohen:

Verse 1:
Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Verse 2:
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Verse 3:
Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Verse 4:
Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Verse 5:
There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Verse 6:
I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

I hope you’ve enjoyed the performance by Kaylee and be touched by her and the lyrics.
